Marcus Overlook offers a good morning or afternoon destination for a half-day hike from Dog Canyon Campground via the Bush Mountain Trail. The Woods rose (Rosa woodsii) grows all along the trail and, when in bloom in May and throughout the summer, its gentle fragrance carries hikers up and over Bush Mountain to Marcus Overlook, with a view into West Dog Canyon. The trail follows the northwestern edge of the Guadalupe mountain range where there is very little shade, so prepare for a lot of afternoon sun. The trailhead is found just beyond the campsites and across from the corrals. From the trailhead, a short hike through a meadow leads to a fork in the trail—left for the Tejas Trail, right for Bush Mountain.
