There is something attractive about large bodies of water, especially when they are less than 1.5 hours from the urban sprawl of Dallas– Ft. Worth. Located just north of the college town of Denton, Lake Ray Roberts is a 30,000-surface-acre reservoir with an irregular shoreline, which creates numerous peninsulas, backwater coves, and a sense of wildness not found in many man-made bodies of water. The large expanses of water serve as perfect sunrise and sunset reflectors as well as a summer playground for the power-boat set, which tells you that the best times to tent-camp here are during the week or anytime from late September to early May.
