This is your typical gorgeous ride through the desert and mountains. You have the Chisos Mountains to the north as you make your way down Glenn Springs Road and then as you ride down Black Gap Road to the old mine area of Mariscal. When the desert is blooming and beautiful this is truly a joyous ride. When you reach the vista west of Glenn Springs, you will be offered a view of all the badlands you are about to traverse, a view that will never fade from memory. The area around the mine is neat—full of abandoned buildings and ruins—a veritable ghost town. This is a ride that requires extreme preparation and a full complement of equipment and supplies. About the only way you can do it is either to pack a ton of stuff along, or have a four-wheel-drive support vehicle tagging along with refreshments. Packing in enough stuff to survive a day in the desert is possible— I’ve done it—but having support is the cherry on the cupcake. As well as the only hope you have of rescue if something goes wrong.
