Lake Bob Sandlin State Park and its Volksmarch Trail are located halfway between the Dallas– Fort Worth metroplex and the Texas–Arkansas– Louisiana border, happily making them a long distance away from large crowds. However, summertime ratchets up the 9400-acre Lake Bob Sandlin’s popularity for boaters, campers, and fishermen. It is one of two reasons why hikers may want to plan their visit in February. The other is the fact that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department stocks the Volksmarch Trail’s little Trout Pond with rainbow trout every winter. Anglers should bring their fly-fishing gear. The Trout Pond is accessible on foot only and includes a primitive camping area with simple bathroom facilities.
