Diverse habitats make this park and adjacent wildlife area, less than an hour west of Corpus Christi, productive for a wide variety of species: waterbirds on the expansive lake; southwestern birds in the arid brushland; and interesting nesting birds and migrants in the riparian woodland. The mesquite trees and other arid scrub vegetation here are home to many species associated with areas to the south and west, making the state park a good place for travelers who aren’t heading any farther in those directions.
