An 18-mile paved and gravel drive through the dense forests of the Big Thicket of southeastern Texas. The Big Thicket of southeast Texas is a unique area with an incredible diversity of plant and animal species. In some areas the soil and conditions are so poor that plants have developed carnivorous traits to survive. Yet only a few dozen yards away the soil can be rich enough to support a dense forest of loblolly pine, beech, and magnolia. Within the thicket only slight differences in soil type, elevation, slope, and available water can create very different habitats. This drive and some short walks on preserve trails introduce the Big Thicket. Special attractions: Big Thicket National Preserve, lush forest, primeval-looking cypress sloughs, carnivorous plants.
