Monument Hill State Historic Site: Scenic and Historic Trails Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is hiking into history at its best. Following the Kreishe Stairway Trail near the 1850s smokehouse, you’ll find 150-year-old retaining walls to the stone remnants of the first commercial brewery in Texas. Hike the 1860s roadbed, with original bridges (culverts) carved from stone. Go up steep hills to the monument to the fifty-eight Texans of the Sommervell/Mier Expedition of 1842. General Santa Anna’s execution of seventeen of the captured Texans was one of the events that led to the Mexican War.

The view from the bluff overlooking the Colorado River is outstanding. It’s great to find a newly created trail that is also steeped in history. The hike combines the Kreishe Stairway Trail, the Scenic and Historic Trail, and the Schulenberg Ferry Trail, which was developed in late 2007. The addition of the Schulenburg Ferry Trail makes this state historic site a great hiking destination."
