As the Houston metropolitan area expands, northwestern suburbs swallow up land that once was seasonal wetland and expansive grassland —part of the great coastal tallgrass prairie that stretched from southern Louisiana down through eastern Texas. Less than 1 percent of this environment survives today, making it one of the most endangered habitats encompassed by the GTCBT. Thanks in large part to farsighted conservationists, representative tracts of prairie have been protected near Houston and continue to harbor wading birds, waterfowl, shorebirds, and other species.
