As you head west from Austin, you quickly leave the traffic and bright lights of the state’s capitol and begin a journey into Texas history. The 38-mile scenic drive brings you to Pedernales State Park, and a sense of remoteness will have you rolling down your car windows and soaking up the smells of the Texas Hill Country. After leaving the entrance station, an immediate elevation drop brings you closer to the Pedernales River. It has well-spaced campsites that allow both RVs and tents, but the two groups seem to voluntarily separate themselves. The tent campers tend to gather near the nature trail and sites 14 through 31.
