The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center’s (HANC) 155 acres are part of the much larger 1,466-acre tract of land called Memorial Park. One of the largest urban parks in Texas, and formerly known as Camp Logan, the U.S. Army trained soldiers here during World War I. In 1924, the City of Houston set the land aside as a park in memory of those soldiers. The city acquired an additional 1,000 acres for the park from William C. Hobby and his brother Mike.
