40-Acre Lake Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Brazos Bend State Park encompasses an amazing diversity of unique habitats. It provides an opportunity to hike through lake, marshland, and forest environments via ecotones, regions where habitats overlap—prairie to woodland, woodland to marsh, and marshland to lakes—widening the diversity of plants and animals that thrive in these blended ecosystems. Beautiful live oak forests, woodland wetlands, and placid lakes here provide habitat for a large variety of wildlife.
The allure of this lush convergence of wild land lies as much in the broad stroke as in the details such as the park’s tiny pimple mounds, numerous small bumps across the prairie regions believed to be formed by sand and silt that have been driven upward through the prairie’s clay surface. Because their soil composition is different than that of the surrounding clay, the pimple mounds invite their own unique set of species."
