The primary path from Houston into this northwest sector rambles its way through Cypress and a lot of interesting country en route to Austin and points west. Hockley is pure country—ranches, the remains of an old general store, and a great fishing hole. Prairie View at present is home to Prairie View State University, but just over a century ago it was the site of the Kirby Plantation, known as Alta Vista. Deeded to the state in 1876 for use as a college for black youths, the old mansion was the school’s first educational building. Given its somewhat sleepy air today, it’s hard to believe that Hempstead once was known as Six-Shooter Junction, and that for several decades after the Civil War, it was a wild and woolly place.
