Friedrich Wilderness Park Main Loop, Vista Loop, and Fern Del Trail

Friedrich Wilderness Park: Main Loop, Vista Loop, and Fern Del Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Perched high on the Balcones Escarpment, this hike becomes exhilarating on the short Fern Del Trail. Go up steep limestone outcroppings, called steps, through a dwarf forest and along a singletrack, cliff-hugging path overlooking the canyon. Vista Loop offers a glimpse of the San Antonio skyline. Follow segments of the Main Loop, Vista Loop, Fern Del, and Water Trail to get the best of Friedrich.

Start at the Main Loop trailhead, located near the sidewalk adjacent to the parking lot. Pick up a trail map at the sign-in stand near the restrooms. This hike combines sections of the Main Loop, Vista Loop, Fern Del Trail, and Water Trail to view the contrast between the flat valleys, dwarf forests, narrow ridge tops, steep hillsides, and limestone balcones found in the park. All trails have signs telling their level of difficulty, from Level One, the easiest, to Level Four, the most difficult."
