This fifty-acre nature park is a fine resource for local residents and visitors. It’s also one of the planned “gateway ” sites of the World Birding Center. The local Arroyo Colorado Audubon Society has worked hard to replant the fifty-acre park (once a landfill) with native species such as Texas ebony, huisache (an acacia), retama, honey mesquite, and granjeno (desert hackberry). There’s a butterfly garden beside the parking lot, from which interconnecting trails wind through scrubby woodland and open areas. One trail parallels Arroyo Colorado, a good-size creek that flows eastward to empty into Laguna Madre at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.Reeds line the creek in many places, but along the trail, vegetation has been cleared for better viewing.
