"The popular McKittrick Canyon Trail is a superb out- and- back adventure up a deep canyon to historic Pratt Cabin. Day hikers can continue another mile to The Grotto and Hunter’s Line Cabin. Here the trail leaves the canyon and steeply climbs to The Notch and McKittrick Ridge, gaining 2,700 feet, on one of the park’s toughest trails. The 4.8- mile round- trip hike to Pratt Cabin, however, is easy, family friendly, and has minimal elevation gain. McKittrick Canyon, considered one of the most beautiful spots in Texas, is a place of running water and shady trees. It’s particularly gorgeous in late October and early November when autumn paints the maples and oaks with a palette of red, yellow, and orange." Read more

"The McKittrick Canyon Nature Trail is a 0.9- mile- long singletrack trail that makes a loop hike across a scrubby outwash slope below the Guadalupe Mountains. This excellent kid- friendly hike, lying near the mouth of McKittrick Canyon on the eastern side of the national park. It offers lots of interpretive signs that explain the native plants and animals of the Chihuahuan Desert, the area’s geology, and wildland fires. The hike is also great for birdwatching, with numerous species found in a valley below the trail. Allow an hour to hike the moderately easy trail." Read more
