"The popular McKittrick Canyon Trail is a superb out- and- back adventure up a deep canyon to historic Pratt Cabin. Day hikers can continue another mile to The Grotto and Hunter’s Line Cabin. Here the trail leaves the canyon and steeply climbs to The Notch and McKittrick Ridge, gaining 2,700 feet, on one of the park’s toughest trails. The 4.8- mile round- trip hike to Pratt Cabin, however, is easy, family friendly, and has minimal elevation gain.
McKittrick Canyon, considered one of the most beautiful spots in Texas, is a place of running water and shady trees. It’s particularly gorgeous in late October and early November when autumn paints the maples and oaks with a palette of red, yellow, and orange."
