Two Gruene / River Road Cruises Professional Review and Guide
"The common thread tying these two tours from Gruene together is the extraordinary 10-mile portion of River Road paralleling the Guadalupe River. It's downhill for most of the way along River Road, and four wide river crossings provide terrific views. Along the river several well-known rapids with colorfully named passages like Slumber Falls and Hueco Springs provide serious challenges to rafters and pleasant scenery for cyclists. Large portions of River Road follow a narrow passage between the tree-shaded river on one side and limestone cliffs on the other. Terrain: gently rolling hills-mostly downhill along River Rd. and generally uphill on the return, with a difficult 1-mile climb on each route. Road: River Rd. is two lanes with no shoulder. Traffic volume is extremely heavy on summer weekends and holidays, but very light from September to May. FM roads are two to four lanes with wide shoulders and higher-speed traffic."

My husband and I found the river road to be very difficult to ride on. There were no shoulders, and very heavy trafiic. This might have been because we went on a Sunday morning, which seemed to be the time that everyone was checking out of their campgrounds and leaving. We couldn't even finish the whole ride because the traffic was so bad.
