Little Windmill Professional Reviews and Guides
"The Little Windmill Trail is a brief, moderately flat respite above Government Canyon just off the Joe Johnston Route. Native junipers and tiny open meadows abound in this part of the state natural area, and a hike here offers relative seclusion in endangered golden-cheeked warbler territory. Water is the thread that links all the characteristics of Government Canyon together, whether captured bubbling from the ground or pumped to the surface by windmills. Ranchers often drilled wells and constructed windmills along high points such as this in order to catch the wind naturally, and also to utilize gravity to fill watering troughs throughout the lower regions of the range. From the trail you’ll get an up-close and personal look at an Aeromotor windmill’s tailfin, complete with shotgun pellet holes, propped up against the trunk of a mammoth live oak tree halfway down the trail."
