The Sawickis' Favorite Hill Country Challenge Professional Review and Guide
"The town of Fredericksburg provides a perfect home base for bicycle touring, with sweet cycling in every direction. The summer climate is moderated by Hill Country elevations, the area's country roads are well maintained and lightly traveled, and rolling hills provide a variety of vistas and challenging terrain. Many of its residents and much of Fredericksburg's architecture is reflective of its German heritage. Some of this history is preserved in interesting local museums and seasonal festivals.
A variety of antiques shops, German bakeries, and handiwork stores will keep shoppers busy. Terrain: rolling hills with three challenging climbs. Road: mostly on quiet, low-traffic country roads. US 290 (used for 3.0 miles), Texas 16 (used for 1.5 miles), and RM 965 (used for .7 mile) have some faster traffic, especially on weekends, but there is ample lane space and shoulder to accommodate cyclists."
