Giant Classic Professional Review and Guide
"The James Dean movie "Giant" was filmed in the countryside near Marfa, and long stretches of this route pass through the ranch land and oil fields that provided the backdrop for this film classic. There is much more to see on this route than the empty spaces of the Marfa Basin. These are open roads, but the expanse of the West Texas countryside is punctuated by some unique geology. Among other things, this route circumscribes a prehistoric volcanic center, whose influences are still visible all along the way. Terrain: many wide, open, exposed stretches. Some gradual climbing and descending close to Fort Davis. A long gradual climb from Alpine to the Paisano Pass. Road: all roads have wide shoulders. Texas 17 and Texas 118 are lightly traveled. There is heavier traffic on US 67/US 90."
