If you are looking for a hidden piece of Texas wilderness that offers great fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and tent camping without an RV in sight, Fairfield Lake State Park is your destination. Only 8 miles off Interstate 45, the terrain here is a mix of hill country and deep east Texas where sleek vultures are often flying high overhead looking for lunch. As you approach the entrance station, the Dockery Trail is on the right and parking for the Big Brown Creek Primitive Camping Area is on the left. This 6-mile trail allows hiking, mountain bikes, and horses and ends at primitive tent sites near the lake.
