This description assumes the hiker is traveling west to east from Old Ore Road to the Adams Ranch. There is no water along this trail; carry plenty. Because summer temperatures often exceed 100°F, this is not a hike for the hot months of the year. The first section of trail by Old Ore Road briefly enters an arroyo near the north end of Alto Relex, then climbs left up a limestone slope studded with cacti and thorny brush. The trail is marked with rock cairns and is fairly easy to follow toward the top of the pass. The rock dam near the top is a good destination for a short day hike. The small dam is similar to many scattered throughout the park, reminders of early settlers’ struggle to capture enough water to survive.
