Begin hiking by following the ruts of a closed road to the top of Cuesta Carlota, near Ernst Tinaja. As you walk, imagine a team of mules struggling to pull a wagon up the slope or picture yourself driving up it in a Model T. The highest point of the cuesta, or ridge, is a great destination for a picnic. The views are worth the short climb, even if you do not continue hiking into Ernst Basin.
