Due to the vandalism and destruction that have taken place in the park, guided hikes are the only way to see much of the rock art. Special reservations are required (contact the park for details), and visitor numbers are limited in order to protect the natural and cultural resources at the park. However, a third of the park’s area is available for self-guided hiking. Other than roping up and bouldering your way along the face of the remnant uplift—an extremely popular activity that draws climbers to Hueco Tanks from around the country—the North Mountain Chain Route is the simplest way for hikers to ascend the surrounding rock. Created before stricter regulations were adopted, the Chain Route is literally a route accompanied by a series of posts and chains that allows hikers to pull their way up the rock surface.
