Hamilton Pool Preserve Trail

Hamilton Pool Preserve Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This is a wonderful hike through a unique geological area that could be a canyon in Colorado rather than the Texas Hill Country. The magnificent grotto is one of the top
natural wonders of the state."

What an awesome place! Hamilton Pool is amazing. The hike in is super easy. Inside the water and cave is so beautiful and peaceful. During the peak season you have to call or visit the website to make a reservation.

Great little hike for a Saturday morning. Kind of busy but you can find some trails that are isolated. Watch out for mountain bikers.

This is a great set of trails within the city, because you get to choose paved or off-road. I chose the latter, and it was a nice experience in the wooded trails. The trails vary between being close to regular roads and the parts where you feel alone. My only caution is be careful about flash flood watches and warnings! There was obvious evidence of a recent flash flood through the area with how the grasses and smaller growth was flattened against the ground, so be careful! Other than that, it is a great escape from the city.

Easy walking on asphalt trails. Trails are shared with bicycles, and people walking dogs. Friendly encounters with other walkers.

If you can only visit one spot in the Texas Hill Country, it should be Hamilton Pool a few days after a decent rain. The falls are spectacular and provide unbelievable photo opportunities. The huge, collapsed grotto allows hikers to travel under a cathedral ledge around and behind the falling water. The huge pool is great for floating and swimming, but I like this park best in the winter, when I can have it to myself. I like to take in the falls, then end the day at the Oasis Restaurant on Lake Travis for a spectacular sunset and great people watching.
