One of America’s great natural areas, Padre Island National Seashore protects 130,454 acres of the longest undeveloped section of barrier island in the world. Undeveloped is the key word here: The great majority of the park comprises rarely visited beach, dunes, grassland, and mudflats. Most visitors remain in the area relatively near the visitor center, south of which stretch 60 miles of roadless sand— a ribbon of land with the Gulf of Mexico on the east and Laguna Madre on the west.
