Packery Channel County Park Professional Review and Guide
"The area offers two main birding attractions. First, the small park provides a good lookout point for a stretch of Laguna Madre (the body of water between the mainland and Padre Island) as well as for small islands and mudflats. Pelicans, cormorants, wading birds, shorebirds, gulls, and terns are always present here, and in winter loons, grebes, and waterfowl settle on the bay. A telescope is helpful in scanning the expanse of water.
There are plans to dredge a channel across the barrier island here, creating an opening from Laguna Madre to the Gulf of Mexico, an action that has concerned local conservationists. The channel will increase boat traffic and development and could affect the habitat of shorebirds and waders."
