Cooper Lake State Park consists of two separate units—the South Sulphur Unit where the Coyote Run trailhead is located, and the smaller Doctors Creek Unit. Cooper Lake is a fairly young impoundment, completed in 1991, and was created by damming the South Sulphur River. It serves as flood control, for municipal water supplies, and for recreation. In fact, the fishing is apparently so good that the lake is used by professional anglers. Pro fishing is a significant industry in Texas, and a number of national fishing competitions take place in the state. Cooper Lake is a great place to catch largemouth bass and hybrid striped bass.
