Flat Rock Ranch

Flat Rock Ranch Professional Review and Guide

"This is one of the finest rides anywhere. There are long, serious climbs and screaming, blistering downhills, all connected by some expertly designed and maintained single-track. The folks who own this ranch are super-nice, and the club who maintains it (STORM) is one of the finest in the state.

This place is an active ranch with livestock scattered about. When you come to a gate you need to open for passage, remember to close it behind you so the cows don’t come home. Use this property with respect—treat it like it belonged to your best uncle or something. Be careful flying down the trail and into the trees; one of those big old 800-pound steers wouldn’t be fun to run into."

We have ridden trails in New Mexico, Colorado and various ones in Texas. This trail is, by far, one of the funnest in the state! 26+ miles of trails, should you care to tackle them all in one day. We were told that the section of the trail by the parking area and up the hill "Upper Loop" was too difficult for a 26" mountain bike to tackle, that it eats 26er's up all day, but that a 29'er could make it. Nonsense! It was difficult, considering we come from the South Plains of Texas, but it was very fun and manageable. $7 to ride until you drop, cant beat that deal. We rode both the upper and lower loops, and had a blast. It is worth a couple hours drive to experience one of the best trails that Texas has to offer.
Every time I get out here I have a blast. Both trails have a great mix of climbs and sweet downhill. Some rocky technical parts and sweeping singletrack through the woods in the lower parts. This has to be one of the most fun rides I have ever done. Parts like the Mad Bomber just make it a great ride for the afternoon or all day. Best the hill country has to offer!
Hats off to STORM for such an awesome place. It has everything a mountain biker would want. Long grinding climbs (had to walk a few) and white knuckled, rocky downhills. Views are incredible and livestock trailblockers for some added adventure. The shower at the end made it all worth while.
