The joint communities of Bryan-College Station tend to have a single connotation to Houstonians—Texas A&M University. While visitors to that sprawling campus will find much of interest, there are several other things to do near Aggieland. Some footnotes on Bryan’s past are interesting. The original street grid inadvertently provided for present-day traffic by making Main Street wide enough to turn a five-yoke oxen team, and the college was deliberately sited on the open prairie 5 miles south of town so as to be well removed from the influence of demon rum, which flowed freely in Bryan’s saloons. An information-loaded historic guide and map covers Bryan’s old commercial and residential districts, as well as the remains of several small pre–Civil War settlements outside town. This eTrail from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Houston. Each Day Trip includes destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping.
