The town of Coldspring, near the south shore of Lake Livingston, is the seat of thickly wooded San Jacinto County and the starting point for these two rambles. The rambles, traveling in opposite directions, are set out here for you to explore the eastern part of the Sam Houston National Forest. Combining the two totals almost 50 miles of cycling through this popular recreation destination located about an hour's drive north of Houston. You will pass two wilderness areas on the first ramble which loops south through Shephard. Double Lake Recreation Area has swimming, fishing, and camping. Big Creek Scenic Area is all hiking trails. The second ramble takes you north past some of the prettier of areas near Wolf Creek and Stephen Creek. Terrain: mostly rolling, fairly gentle terrain. Road: traffic in Coldspring and Shepherd can be heavy. Traffic also may be heavy at times on FM 2025 and Texas 150. Roads are narrow.
