As you travel through the heavy brush country of south Texas between Corpus Christi and San Antonio, the 26,000-surface acre of Choke Canyon Reservoir is a true oasis. This Bureau of Reclamation project not only provides a water supply for the human visitors, but also serves as a prime birding area. Throw in a few local alligators and you have an ideal destination for the tent camper. Leaving the park’s headquarters, you will notice deer-crossing signs, very healthy cacti, mesquite grasslands, and widespread Tamaulipan thorn shrubs.
