Buffalo Gap Cruise Professional Review and Guide
"The village of Buffalo Gap makes a good starting point for bike rides through the countryside near Abilene. Abilene was established by cattlemen as a shipping point for livestock, and major cattle trails and railroad lines converged here. Buffalo Gap was settled at a natural pass in the Callahan Divide, along trails worn by the buffalo that once inhabited the area. Today Buffalo Gap is the site of pleasant shops and a restored historic village. You will see the Callahan Mountains, a ridge resulting from the erosion of a sandstone and shale plateau on your trip. Terrain: rolling hills with some climbs on US 277 and FM 89. Flat stretches on FM 1235. Road: FM roads are two lanes, no shoulder, light traffic. US 277 has high-speed traffic and a wide shoulder, except on hills where the shoulder becomes an extra climbing lane for traffic."
