The hike began knowing we would walk the 2 mi.s to Mule Ear Spring and the corral. About 1 mi. in looking back to the SW Santa Elena Canyon is in view. Having hiked the initial desert terrain the tree covered spring was a nice change but did not give us an indication of the beauty to come. We decided to hike from the spring up to where we had a better view of the Mule Ears. All along this part of the trail quartz(all shades - rose, crystal, white, etc.)is found everywhere! Then we topped out above Smoky Creek. It is an unbelievable view; you can see Dominguez Mtn. and Backbone Ridge to the east. We couldn't resist descending the .5 mi. or so to the junction of the Mule Ears and Smoky Creek trails. A very enjoyable hike; it has more beautiful vistas than I can describe here. We highly recommend this hike.
