Blue Creek Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"If you are hiking only one way, the trail is best done by starting at the Basin and arranging for a shuttle or pickup at the Homer Wilson Blue Creek Ranch overlook on the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive.

This makes a total hike of 9.5 miles. Many hikers walk this route as one leg of the Outer Mountain Loop, although most of these people will be hiking up the Blue Creek Trail rather than down. The Outer Mountain Loop includes the Laguna Meadow, Blue Creek, Dodson, Juniper Canyon, Boot Canyon, and Pinnacles Trails."

I hiked this one as part of the Outer Mountain Loop. We started at the Chisos Basin Visitors Center, went up the Laguna Meadows Trail and down the Blue Creek Trail. About 1 mile from the Homer Ranch site you enter a narrow canyon that has rock formations reminiscent of the National Parks in southern Utah. This part was the highlight of the trail for me. If you are going to back country camp on this trail the options are very thin because of the sloped and rocky terrain. Also, we went in the 2nd week of May and it was very hot and dry. There was no water source. We cached water at the Homer Ranch bear box.
