Big Bend National Park-Rio Grande Village and Cottonwood Campgrounds Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Leaving the cool dry air of the Chiso Basin area, the 38-mile drive to the Rio Grande Village Campground takes the tent camper through 3,600 feet of elevation loss and expanses of the Chihuahuan Desert that appear endless, with the drive ending with an arrival in a shaded oasis which seems almost tropical.

When considering camping at Rio Grande Village, be aware that temperatures from May to September are probably not pleasant for tent camping, but winter months allow not only for good overnight stays but also for incredible bird-watching opportunities in an area with more than 450 confirmed species. The joy of desert hiking is also greater in the wintertime."
