Kirby Trail

Kirby Trail Professional Review and Guide

"An easy day hike to Village Creek. Special Attractions: Large cypresses, lush forest. The Kirby Trail passes through several of the plant communities found in the Big Thicket. Numbered stops along the trail follow the interpretive guidebook available at the trailhead. This hike follows the outer loop, althoughshorter loops are possible.

The preserve's temporary visitor information center is at the trailhead, along with chemical toilets. Go left at the start of the loop at the trailhead. The trail descends through the
slope forest community, dominated by beech, magnolia, and loblolly pine. The first two bridges cross very wet baygalls. The acidic water pooled in baygalls turns almost black from tannin leached from leaves. At about .7 mile, the trail forks. Unless it's flooded, be sure to go left onto the cypress loop. The trail passes some very large bald cypresses that somehow escaped loggers in earlier years."
