Southeast Metropolitan Park Primitive Trail

Southeast Metropolitan Park: Primitive Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Hiking nearly 3 miles up, down, and around the backbone of a ridge, with forest, cactus, and undergrowth reaching to the trail’s edge, makes this feel like the wilderness. Two ponds offer resting points on their fishing piers. Downtown Austin can be seen from one of the overlooks.

Start on the Primitive Trail, reputed to be the best in the southeast Austin area. No maps are available, but there is a large map board at the trailhead. Trail markers are numbered 1 through 60."

"This hike offers a variety of sights and sounds, and with numbered markers every 200 feet, you will always know just how far you and your pooch have traveled and how much hike you have left.

Small animals rustling in the brush, fallen trees, and scents left behind by wildlife give your dog plenty of interesting things to sniff. The trail is mostly dirt with some areas of grass and some of rocks, with the occasional chunk of flint."
