With its numerous peaks over 3,000 feet and its rich forested valleys, Frozen Head may be one of the most highly sculpted parks in the state park system. It is also one of the largest, with over 24,000 acres and 50 miles of trails. This hike is a combination of several trails and covers some of the highlights of the park, from the Lookout Tower up on Frozen Head Mountain to several very nice waterfalls.

Great trail...especially if you are a beginner. Gradual incline with the last 3/4mi up to the lookout tower being the steepest. Trail is narrow and if you had to pass someone you will have to be careful. All in all i had a great hike even though it rained the entire time.

We hiked the trail from the Frozen Head campground taking the Parthner Branch Trail, comming up to the North Old Mac Mountain about 2.5 mile in, and taking South Old Mac Trail back to the camp. Narrow, steep at some sections, good warm up trail. The best feature would be the steep dropp along the entire trail on your left (the mountain would be on your right) The next day we did the 12 mile loop toping the Chimney Top Trail in less than 2.5 hrs. Now that was a challenge - even though I consider myself physically fit this trail made my hear pumping several times.

I hiked to the Frozen Head summit from Armes Gap, round trip distance is 5.5 miles from there. It was a very pleasant and gradual hike. The observation deck on top of the old fire tower is very nice. You can see electricity being generated three ways from here. Watts Bar Cooling Towers, Kingston Coal towers, and Buffalo Mtn. windmill farm.

The distances on park signposts and maps are longer than the distance cited in this report. Allow time for the additional distance. Other than that, the trails (we returned by the South Old Mac Trail) are well maintained and interesting. A good hike.
