A winding, 44-mile paved route through the southern Appalachian Mountains, through the ancestral territories of the Cherokee Indian nation. This route is also called the Cherohala Skyway. The Overhill Skyway originates in the Great Valley of Tennessee and traverses the Unicoi Mountain Range during its journey across the southern Appalachian Range in Tennessee and North Carolina. The two-lane road is paved and has frequent turnouts and overlooks. Weekends along the entire byway are generally busy. Weekends in spring, summer, and fall are extremely busy along the popular Tellico River and parking can be difficult to find. Special attractions: Three wildernesses: Bold River Gorge, Citico Creek, and Joyce Kilmer Slickrock; whitewater sports, scenic overlooks, nature trails, camping, hunting, backpacking, bicycling. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more.

Definitely one of the best kept "secrets" in the area; I use the term "secret" because no one ever seems to know about it, tourist or local alike. For drivers and motorcyclists, this is one of THE best and most beautiful roads to spend an hour or so on. Long, sweeping curves and breathtaking views the entire way! If you come to it from Tellico, take 15 minutes to 1st continue PAST the entrance to Cherohala on your left and go see Bald River Falls. It's only a few miles down the river road and you can easily swing around and backtrack. Do know that if you take the Cherohala from Tellico in TN all the way to Joyce Kilmer in NC, your shortest route back into TN is via 129, a.k.a The Dragon. Nothing any bike or decent driver can't handle, but if you plan to go slow for the views or otherwise, PLEASE be polite and use the pulloffs on both of these amazing roads to let others by! Most sport car and bike enthusiasts understand that not everyone wants to keep the pace. Fall is on the way and this is one of the best places to be for the change of seasons!

Wonderful Drive. On the tennessee side, check out Blount River Falls, and Falls Branch falls trail. The views are spectacular, especially this time of the year with the leaves changing. On the North Carolina side don't miss the Joyce Kilmer Forest.
