This is an excellent hike for families with young children. The interpretive brochure explains many sites on the trail that take you through the woods and karst topography, with its limestone outcrops and sinkholes. Watch for turtles and waterbirds along the shoreline of the lake. This is karst and cedar glade country. A karst is an area with little to no topsoil, with limestone outcrops reaching to the surface. The underlayer of limestone is gradually dissolved by water seeping through, allowing caves, passageways, and underground streams to be formed. Over time the top layers of limestone over the caves collapse, forming sinkholes and crevasses, which are the signature features of a karst.
