"Cookeville is probably best known for Tennessee Technological University, which educates approximately 8,500 students annually. Cookeville has been pegged as one of America’s top ten retirement places and was cited as the most economical city in the nation in 1995. Crossville is the county seat for Cumberland County and was the site of a Subsistence Homestead project during the Depression. About 250 local families benefited from Franklin D. Roosevelt’s program that attempted to aid the rural population during the Depression of the 1930s. Today many of the homes built then are still owned by former homesteaders.
