Millington hovers just on the south side of the highway about 5 miles north of Memphis. Millington is home of the world’s largest inland navy base. It’s also, according to the mayor, a city in transition, with widely expanding subdivisions and quickly growing commerce. Shelby State Park borders the east bank of the Mississippi River. More than 60 percent of the 13,000-acre park is hardwood forest, including oak, cypress, and tupelo trees.
Spend the day enjoying the natural environment, which also includes two lakes and hiking trails, or bring your boat to the ramp and float along the river while you watch the deer, turkeys, beavers, and birds. This eTrail from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Memphis. Each Day Trip includes, destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping.
