Shelbyville, a community of some 13,000 residents, has gained international recognition for two things as different as night and day: Tennessee walking horses and pencils. Known as the “Walking Horse Capital of the World” because of the annual celebration in August that draws 250,000 people, the area is teeming with picturesque horse farms and stables. The downtown square in Lynchburg has a lot to offer the day traveler, with a quaint array of shops and restaurants. The people are friendly, and the community thrives on tourism. The annual Christmas in Lynchburg event in December is a fun way to kick off the holiday season. Lynchburg is the home of the Jack Daniel’s distillery, which is one of the biggest draws for this town of some 350 residents.
The town square is the site of the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue celebration each October Where else can you get a hamburger made with whiskey or a Jack Daniel’s sundae? This eTrail from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of Nashville. Each Day Trip includes destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping.
