Smokemont is strategically located on the Oconaluftee River at the base of the Smoky Mountains. From this location, campers can enjoy the immediate beauty of this national park, and jump onto Newfound Gap Road northbound to explore other segments of the park. Take Newfound Gap Road just a few miles south and you are in the tourist town of Cherokee. And if that isn’t enough, you can take a ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which has just come 400-plus miles from Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to end near Smokemont. But this campground, nestled in a flat along Bradley Fork near the Oconaluftee River, exudes an old-time national park campground atmosphere that may just keep you mostly at your campsite, poking a stick into the fire, watching the trees grow, or listening to the water flow.
