Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"You literally follow in Daniel Boone’s footsteps on this hike. In 2001 and 2002 the park service restored Cumberland Gap to its original contour and invited visitors to get a taste of the pioneer experience. This walk—a good one for children—takes you through the gap and up to a ridgetop where the states of Kentucky,Tennessee, and Virginia meet.

Cumberland Gap was an important eighteenth-century doorway through the Appalachian Mountains for settlers on their way westward. In the twentieth century the gap continued as a major transportation route, but one covered in asphalt. For decades US 25E, a key north–south highway, ran smack through this storied mountain notch."
