While circling Byrd Lake, this laurel- and rhododendron-lined loop crosses the lake’s numerous contributing streams. The Pioneer Short Loop provides a shorter walk than the longer loop of the Pioneer Trail. From the parking area, walk down to the dock and cross abridge over Byrd Lake, named for one leader of the Homesteads project. On the other side, the Byrd Lake Trail (Hike 29) with orange blazes bears left. A stairway leads up to the swimming pool and recreation lodge. Turn right and follow the white blazes to hike the Pioneer Short Loop. Follow the water’s edge on your right through a pine and laurel forest with occasional fern-capped sandstone boulders and rock shelves to your left.
