This trail follows the upper edge of the bluff from Ochs Museum, where the Kentucky Volunteers first planted their flag in the battle, passes Sunset Rock, a lookout position in the Battle of Lookout Mountain, and ends near Covenant College across the Georgia border. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park straddles the state line and was one of the nation’s first four military parks. The park was established in 1890 to commemorate the Battle of Lookout Mountain, one of the bloodiest of the Civil War, which resulted in over 34,000 casualties (including 2,500 dead) from both Confederate and Union ranks. The campaign, which covered a front of over 150 miles, is commemorated by 1,400 monuments placed by veterans.

Fun trail. We did it as the way the guide recommended. Fairly easy trail with good views of the Valley. Mostly shaded. Couple of thoughts 1) They apparently updated the mileage signs which match the Guidebook. 2) The guide recommends doing the .6 mile hike up to the parking lot of Covenant College (you take a trail to the left). I wouldn't bother. The College isn't at the trail head and was very anticlimactic. We kind of wished we just turned around where the trail split off and headed back.

It was a chilly, rainy day... but I was determined to have my first hike of 2010. This is a fairly easy hike. I have done it before when the weather was glorious. The views are great and you will typically encounter some other hikers and rock climbers on your journey. This day was pretty dreary but I still ran into about 1/2 a dozen folks on the trail. Great trail for beginners, families, pets, etc. Great way to get out and move!!

My husband and I hiked part of this trail on Valentine's Day. We got onto the trail at Craven's house and followed it up to Sunset Rock. The trail was moderately rocky, but always interesting. There was even a place along the way to do some rock climbing. Sunset Rock was a great place to overlook the city, sit down, rest, and have a bite to eat before heading back down the mountain. We really enjoyed this trail and found it very easy.
