Salmon Lake Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The hike to Loch Leven Lakes is probably the most beloved of the high mountain trails visited by Sacramentans. This easy day trip is a quick drive up I-80 from the state’s capital and offers outstanding alpine scenery. The only drawback is that the traditional route to Loch Leven lakes requires you to slog up a 1000-foot-high ridge across railroad tracks, all the while accompanied by the sound of I-80 traffic and trains. But the “back” way into Loch Leven Lakes, via the Salmon Lake Trail, avoids most of the climb, all of the noise, and visits more lakes. All that is required is some patience driving on a relatively well-maintained dirt road. What’s not to like?"

Wouldn't exactly call it easy. Then again, we're no desendents of the Donner family. The change in elevation was more like 500 feet on the garmin. A nice trip nonetheless. Lakes are very picturesque and serene for being so close to 80.
Was a fairly easy, scenic hike. Great to take the kids on. We had our two grandchildren and they enjoyed it. The lakes are really pretty and fun to swim.
This is a great hike from I-80 (moderately challenging). The views are amazing and the overall solitude is fair to good. The area was very clean and appeared to be respected by the users. It is on repeat list.
