Reporters come out to check out the freaky phenomenon. So, heck, thought members of the Sumter Chain Gang Bicycle Club, why don’t we name a bike ride after the scaly, green creature? We’ll send a pack of maniac cyclists out to scour the back roads of Lee, Clarendon, and Sumter counties in search of Lizard Man. No matter that Lizard Man’s glow-in-the-dark, red eyes shun harsh sunlight. If he’s out there, cyclists will surely find him. Lizard Man, a mythical creature first sighted in 1988, is said to reside in Scape Ore Swamp in Lee County. He has been sighted on several different occasions by area residents passing by the swamp. While the bicycle route does not venture into Scape Ore Swamp, it does pass by many swampy areas. The metric century route (62.3 miles) heads out from Shaw Air Force Base in a southerly direction. The terrain surrounding Sumter is fairly flat, with the occasional steep hill providing an unexpected challenge. The beginning miles make an inspiring sweep past the Shaw AFB runway.
