Landsford Canal State Historic Site Professional Review and Guide
"A stroll along the scenic Catawba River, featuring wondrous wildflowers, a wide variety of birds, and historic canal structures. Landsford Canal is famous for wildflowers. Wildflowers found in the park include cardinal flower, Jack-in-the-pulpit, crane-fly orchid, spicebush, spiderwort, Solomon’s seal, fire pink, and yellow passionflower.
The Catawba rapids feature the rare rocky shoals spider lily. A sign directs you to the left, up and down stairs, to the best viewing area for spider lilies. During May, the lilies’ peak blooming season, they seem to fill the river. Return to the trail, and farther along you encounter the canal’s locks, still impressive after more than 150 years. At the end of the canal trail, a bridge over the locks leads to a small picnic area and a boat put-in on the river. The stone bridge is interesting in and of itself, as it forms a flying arch."
